Not every hotel called Belvedere also has the beautiful view that its name promises – but this one does: From the new Omakase bar of the Hotel Belvedere you can see far over the sea, below you can also see the Chora, the center of Mykonos its jumbled white houses, their edges rounded to keep the wind from whistling as it swept over them. French archaeologists, who were accommodated on Mykonos because of the excavations on the neighboring island of Delos – where, according to the myth, Artemis and Apollon were born – made sure that there were no multi-storey new buildings here, says Tasos Ioannidis, who together with his siblings now controls the fortunes of the Belvedere. It was once in the midst of fertile fields, which was an exception on Mykonos even then. Even today, the garden looks more lush than any other place on the otherwise rather barren island. It has always attracted illustrious travelers. The great modernist Le Corbusier found inspiration on the tiny islet in 1933, declaring “whatever architecture has to say, it says here”, and those who wish can look to the asymmetrical facade of the Church of Panagia Paraportiani, down by the sea, as a model for his famous chapel recognize by Ronchamp.
