German Chancellor Olaf Scholz intends to take personal control of the relationship between Berlin and Moscow. This was reported on Monday, January 3, by the German newspaper Bild. According to her, the head of the FRG government is counting on a “qualitatively new start” in relations between the two countries.

Bild says that preparations are already underway for a meeting between Scholz and Russian President Vladimir Putin. German Chancellor Jens Plötner has been preparing “for two weeks” these negotiations, which may take place in January, the tabloid writes.

Russian gas supplies and the situation around Ukraine

At the same time, Berlin is primarily concerned about the supply of Russian gas, as well as the aggravation of the situation on the border of the Russian Federation and Ukraine, the newspaper notes. German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit (Steffen Hebestreit) has not yet commented on the information about a possible meeting between Putin and Scholz. Moscow also has not yet confirmed that negotiations could take place in January.

Meeting at the level of representatives of the Russian Federation and the Federal Republic of Germany

Earlier, on December 25, 2021, it became known that Jens Plötner and the special representative of the President of the Russian Federation for Ukraine Dmitry Kozak would meet in early January to discuss the conflict around Ukraine. Chancellor Scholz’s adviser has called for a de-escalation of tensions on the Russian-Ukrainian border. Official Berlin aims to “promptly resume” the Normandy format, “dpa’s interlocutors emphasized.

Biden-Putin telephone conversation

Earlier, on the night of December 31, 2021, telephone talks were held between the presidents of the United States and the Russian Federation, Joseph Biden and Vladimir Putin. The conversation lasted about 50 minutes.

During the telephone conversation, the American leader called for a de-escalation of the conflict between Moscow and Kiev and promised that the United States and its allies would “resolutely respond” in the event of an invasion of Russian troops into Ukraine, the White House press service reported after the conversation.

The Kremlin press service indicated that Putin, in a conversation with Biden, called the possibility of adopting large-scale sanctions against Russia in the event of an escalation of the situation around Ukraine “a serious mistake, in fact, threatening a complete rupture of Russian-American relations.”

Conversation between Biden and Zelensky

Later, on January 2, Biden spoke by phone with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskiy. He promised the President of Ukraine that Washington would not make decisions concerning Washington’s partners without their knowledge.
