The socialist María Chivite has been invested this Tuesday as president of Navarra in a second vote. The socialist candidate had not obtained an absolute majority of 26 votes to be elected on the first ballot.

On the one hand, the block that has signed the government pact (PSN, Geroa Bai and Contigo-Zurekin) obtained 21 supports compared to the 20 obtained by UPN, PP and Vox. The abstention of EH Bildu has been key for María Chivite to be re-elected -with a simple majority- in this second vote.

The second vote was held this holiday Tuesday. The vote has been secret and each representative in the Navarrese Parliament deposited their vote in the ballot box.

Chivite will preside over a coalition government made up of 13 departments: eight for the PSN, four for Geroa Bai and one for Contigo. The groups that have voted against criticized the socialist president for signing a “losers’ agreement”, continuing to bet on approving her measures with EH Bildu and ignoring the offer made by UPN.

María Chivite graduated in Sociology from the Public University of Navarra (2001) and studied a master’s degree in HR Organization and Management at the European Forum (2002). It was in 1998 when she joined the Socialist Youth. Her first public position was in 2003 as a councilor in the Cintruénigo City Council and in 2007 she was elected as a regional parliamentarian as spokesperson for the Health Commission (2007 – 2011).

In 2011 she took office as a senator, she was appointed during the first stage in the Upper House as spokesperson for Health and since September 2014 as spokesperson for the Socialist Group of the Senate.

In 2015-2019 he returned to the Parliament of Navarra to head the PSN-PSOE list. Since August 2019, she has been President of the Foral Community of Navarra, a position that she now reissues.
