Ukraine will not cede part of its territories to Russia in exchange for the possibility of joining NATO, the adviser to the Presidency, Miikhail Podoliak, said on Tuesday, stressing that it would be “ridiculous” to accept that idea.
Stian Jenssen, head of the NATO secretary general’s cabinet, slipped earlier that Ukraine could join the bloc in exchange for handing over part of its territory to Russia.according to the Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang.
He also commented that the possible status of Ukraine was already being discussed after the end of the war that began in February 2022 and that, in addition, the possible handover of territories to Russia had already been discussed.
“Trading the territory for the NATO umbrella? It’s ridiculous. That is, deliberately choosing to defeat democracy, encouraging a global criminal, preserving the Russian regime, destroying international law and extending the war to other generations,” Podoliak wrote on Twitter.
He added that “If Russian President Vladimir Putin does not suffer a crushing defeat, the political regime in Russia does not change, and war criminals are not punished, war will definitely return, with Russia’s appetite for more”according to the ANSA and Sputnik news agencies.
