Thousands of people demonstrated on Monday in Sarajevo and several other cities in Bosnia, three days after the violent murder of a woman by her husband. The 35-year-old livestreamed the murder on Instagram before killing two other people in his escape and killing himself.

These murders and the live broadcast on social networks shocked the small Balkan country. “We demand that femicide be qualified as a specific criminal act [dans le Code pénal] and that it be treated as a particular form of murder”, launched Benjamina Karic, mayor of Sarajevo, in front of the demonstrators on Monday.

Live Murder

The city councilor of the capital also called for more serious sentences for femicide and domestic and family violence, as well as the construction of more “safe houses” for women victims of violence. She also encouraged victims to denounce their attackers. “This is the last moment to adopt adequate measures”, insisted Benjamina Karic.

The live broadcast of the murder was followed by several thousand people, some of whom even supported the attacker’s fatal march. After the assassination, the 30-year-old killed two other people, a man and his son, and injured three others, including a policeman, before committing suicide.

According to local NGOs, around 20 women have been killed by their spouses in Bosnia over the past two years. In this country of 3.5 million people, 48% of women have experienced some form of violence from a man after the age of 15, according to a 2018 OSCE study.
