“We cannot allow weapons to be the choice of those in power”, insists President Talon

Like ECOWAS, several organizations and the international community strongly condemn the coup by CNSP soldiers in Niger. But, this hardening of your poorly perceived tone, makes certain populations believe that the organization draws its ideas from foreign leaders. Is ECOWAS in the pay of France, which would prevent African countries from developing?

What you should know : Established since 1975, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is an organization made up of fifteen countries in the sub-region. It is not only about the French-speaking countries, formerly colonized by France. For example, countries like Nigeria and Ghana are members of the organization. And Nigeria currently holds the presidency with the president, Bola Tinubu. In view of this composition, it is absurd even to infantilize the member countries of the organization by thinking that France dictates or imposes the decisions to be taken. Better, it is to observe the positions of the United States of America or the UN supporting the same decisions of ECOWAS. Therefore, it is simply amazing to hear in the argument of the opinion manipulators that when France supports the decisions of ECOWAS, it is considered as it is she who directs the game. But, the real challenge to deal with this manipulation orchestrated by pseudo Pan-Africanists, it is the good governance of the countries headed by visionary and ambitious leaders. As an example, Benin, which has found this path since 2016, where the quality of governance has improved considerably. Which changes the state of the country more and more positively.

Why is ECOWAS decided : From the outset, the decisions taken by the ECOWAS summits are those of the organization. By imposing sanctions on Niger, it is a question, in doing so, of not letting anarchy settle in to the point of destabilizing the entire sub-region. As a result, it is normal that ECOWAS does not allow itself to be pushed around. Otherwise, countries would enter a vicious cycle of endless repetition without ever succeeding in improving people’s living conditions. To be silent is also to accept that this will be repeated elsewhere in other countries tomorrow. So, it is accepted that in countries already in crisis, there are counter coups. Because, the reason of the strongest of the moment, it is that of the one who holds the weapons. In any case, if ECOWAS were obliged to intervene militarily, it would not be a question of starting a war against the people of Niger, but just of a specific action with a view to restoring democracy and the sovereignty of the country.

Why is Benin engaged : It must be understood that Benin’s position is simply that of ECOWAS and its member countries. As a member of the organization, Benin has an interest and an obligation to ensure that stability reigns in Niger. This clearly justifies his involvement. Because, if Niger becomes as unstable as other countries in the Sahel, insecurity will grow more and leaders will be forced to devote even more resources to deal with it. Which resources are necessary for the improvement of the living conditions of the populations, the implementation of the PAG projects. It is therefore not a disproportionate commitment for Benin.

“We cannot allow weapons to be the choice of the rulers”

At the end of the 2nd extraordinary summit of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS on the political situation in Niger last Thursday, August 10 in Abuja, President Patrice Talon spoke about the decision taken at this summit. At this meeting, ECOWAS ordered the deployment of its standby force. “We cannot allow weapons to be the choice of the rulers of countries. In no way will ECOWAS accept that coups d’etat become the means by which rulers must be appointed,” President Patrice Talon suggested at the end of the meeting. He explained that if the organization lets itself go, the sub-region will be disintegrated. Patrice Talon assured that the “essential motivation of ECOWAS bodies is to protect the law, human rights, democracy, good governance for the development of our countries”, recalling that voting remains the only way out. which, the people express themselves. Referring to the decisions taken for the release of President Bazoum and a return to constitutional order, he first insisted on the dialogue advocated by ECOWAS to peacefully resolve this crisis. But faced with the putschists’ refusal to negotiate, the Beninese president hinted that it is by “force that bad force will be defeated”. “After having tried by all means to negotiate with the putschists, we decided that if we have no choice, it would be by force that the bad force will be defeated”, he hammered.
