Tourism sector | Tourism sets a historical employment record with 2.8 million affiliates

Tourism is registering a record summer and is moving towards a historic year after the stoppage caused by the pandemic. Driven by the boom in demand from national and foreign travelers and by rising prices, the growth of activity is also managing to boost the data of tourism industry employment.

The tourism sector continues to accelerate job creation and set a new all-time high for workers in July. The companies of the different branches of the tourist activity reached last month a total of 2,807,626 members of the Social Security, 3.9% more than in the same month last year and 7.2% above the levels of the summer of 2019 pre-pandemic.

The sector has already been marking all-time highs for employment for four consecutive months. The pull of Easter made the tourism industry reach 2.72 million affiliates in April, in May they climbed to 2.75 million workers before the summer season, in June they exceeded 2.76 million affiliates and in July a new level was reached, exceeding 2.8 million jobs for the first time.

Nearly one in seven jobs

According to the records of the Social Security and the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, the Tourism employment now accounts for 13.6% of the total number of affiliates in the national economyalmost one in seven jobs in the Spanish market. “Tourism employment is symbolizing an extraordinary 2023, and the data demonstrates the strength of our business fabric and the unquestionable drive of the Government after the pandemic”, stressed the Minister of Industry, Héctor Gómez.

During In the last year the tourism sector has created a total of 104,981 additional jobs in relation to July of the previous year -when the employment record that has been maintained until last April was set-, with increases in all tourist branches. In the hospitality branch, the increase was 62,504 (24,002 in accommodation services and 38,502 in food and beverage services); in travel agencies the rise was 5,758 workers; and in the register of other tourist activities, employment increased by 36,719 people.

In July the number of wage earners in the tourism sector, which represents 82.1% of the total affiliated workers in said sector, increased by 4.7% compared to the same month of the previous year. Self-employment in tourism, which represents 17.9% of all affiliated workers, increased by 0.3%.

Stable employment

From the sector it is presumed that the employment that is being created this year is stable and of quality. He is exaltedthe lobby that brings together some thirty of the largest companies in the sector (among them, Meliá, NH, Iberia, Globalia, Riu or Amadeus), stresses that temporary employment has fallen to historic lows and that permanent contracts have become widespread to the point of concentrating two thirds of the total, not including in this figure the figure of permanent discontinuous ones.

According to the analysis of the business association of the data corresponding in this case to the month of June, the temporary rate of the sector sank to only 7.9% of all contracts, compared to 38.5% to which it rose before the pandemic, in 2019. Permanent contracts exceed 67% of the total affiliates in June (40% full-time permanent and 27% part-time), compared to 49% in the last pre-covid year. The labor market in this period presents 650,000 permanent contracts more and 518,000 temporary contracts less, underlines the lobby of the large groups in the sector.

Exceltur has also been stressing that the boom in permanent contracts is well above that of discontinuous permanent ones, in full political controversy over the statistical accounting of this type of contract. The weight of permanent contracts almost triples that of discontinuous fixeds, which account for 24.3% of the total. The discontinuous permanent employees -employees who work only in the months in which there is activity and who receive unemployment benefit year after year in the low season- represent a traditional figure in the tourism sector due to the seasonality of the business.

The tourism sector itself recognizes that the greater stability of employment has occurred thanks to the implementation of the labor reform approved by the current Government, which came into force in March 2022 and which reduces the cases in which companies can signing temporary contracts and has caused indefinite contracts and discontinuous permanent contracts to skyrocket.
