President Joe Biden and first lady Dr. Jill Biden are set to travel to Hawaii on Monday to assess the aftermath of the devastating wildfires that have ravaged the island. The visit comes in response to mounting pressure on Biden, who has faced criticism for not addressing the disaster more directly. Former President Donald Trump and other Republicans have been vocal about their dissatisfaction with Biden’s handling of the crisis.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre announced the visit, stating that the Bidens will meet with first responders, survivors, and federal, state, and local officials to discuss the recovery effort. The trip will allow the Bidens to see firsthand the impact of the wildfires and the loss of life and land.
Initially, Biden expressed hesitation about visiting Hawaii, as he did not want his presence to interfere with ongoing search and rescue operations. However, Hawaii Democratic Gov. Josh Green advised that the recovery efforts would be at a stage where a presidential visit would be appropriate.

FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell assured reporters that the visit would not impede the work of search and rescue teams. Biden has remained in close communication with top officials, including Green and FEMA leadership.

Over 500 federal personnel are on the ground, and assistance from the US Coast Guard and Navy has been mobilized for search and rescue operations. Additionally, disaster loans, child nutrition and SNAP benefits, and logistical support from the Department of Defense are being provided.
