The protagonists of Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film are two teenagers in the 1970s in Los Angeles. Gary and Elena. When Gary first sees Elena, from whom he is a decade younger, he falls in love at first sight. From that moment on, we are actually entering an intoxicating, sweeping, young and dramatic world, which takes place against a backdrop of landscapes and backdrops that only Anderson can sustain.
The plot beckons to the life story of the director’s best friend, Gary Gotzman, and Anderson manages to solder his memories in an admirable, flowing, authentic and sweeping way. Licorice Pizza, which lasts two full hours, features well-characterized characters, evoking empathy and emotion, ones that are hard to forget even after the film comes to an end.
In fact, the protagonists, who are completely embodied by two inexperienced actors, make this film so cohesive and fascinating. Gary’s character is played by young actor Cooper Hoffman, when he starred in Anderson’s latest films. But alongside the two young actors, you will also find well-known and beloved Hollywood actors, including Sean Penn, who plays an aging and unconscious movie star.
Bradley Cooper is also present here, he plays the partner of singer Barbara Streisand and as usual he steps into the character’s shoes in such a natural and impressive way, reminding us all that he is one of the strongest and best actors of the period. By the way, the director’s partner, Maya Rudolph, also appears in one of the scenes for a moment or two.
