The light rail in Gush Dan will start operating this Friday, the line will travel on a route of 34 stations, between Petah Tikva and Bat Yam, of which 10 are underground and 24 are above ground. Three different origin and destination lines will operate on the line, with the origin stations being Petah Tikva Central Station, the Kiryat Aryeh train station in Petah Tikva, Elifelt Street in Tel Aviv and Kommiat Station in Bat Yam.

The distance between the stations will be a kilometer in the underground section and 500 meters in the surface sections. At this stage, the train will have priority at the traffic lights for only 70% of the length of the line, the delays at the traffic lights are mainly in the part that goes through Bat Yam. The traffic light system will be calibrated gradually. The end-to-end travel speed will be one hour and twenty minutes, but this is expected to improve and be substantially under an hour later. In the upper part, pedestrians will also cross the lane in special crossings.

It will be possible to board the light rail with folded bicycles and scooters. Service and guide dogs will be able to board freely, and boarding will be allowed for dogs of a size that can be placed on the lap.

Line route and frequency

Line R1 will operate between the communal station in Bat Yam and the central station in Petah Tikva (in both directions).

Line R2 (partially operated) will operate between the Kommiam station in Bat Yam and the Kiryat Aryeh station in Petah Tikva (in both directions).

Line R3 will operate between Elifelt station in Tel Aviv-Jaffa and Kiryat Aryeh station in Petah Tikva (in both directions).

In the future, the route of the red line should be extended south into Rishon Lezion with 3 stops to the “Moshe Dayan” (heavy) train station and connect there with the future green line which is currently under construction and is scheduled to open in 2028.

On the R1 line, Petach Tikva to Bat Yam will move six trains per hour at the opening of the line, and another four will move from Kiryat Aryeh to Eliphalet on the R3 line. This will result in an average frequency of every six minutes, in the underground section.

working hours

In summer time, the train will operate from 5:40 am Sunday to Friday, with the last train leaving between 10:12 pm and 11:21 pm and the train is expected to end its operation at 1 am. On Fridays and holiday eves the last train will leave between 15:49 and 16:46, depending on the station of departure.

On Saturday evening, the hours of activity will be reduced to a low frequency and will begin at 9:30 p.m. with the last train leaving at 10:30 p.m. from Bat Yam to Petah Tikva, at 10:13 p.m. :19 from Elifelt station in Tel Aviv to Kiryat Aryeh in Petah Tikva. (The full list of hours is at the bottom of the article)

Travel validity and cost

The cost of the trip will be similar to traveling by bus – NIS 5.5 up to a distance of 15 kilometers, while the current agreement between the Ministry of Transportation and the Ministry of Finance is that in 2025 the price will increase, beyond the cost of traveling by other vehicles and will be NIS 8.

App users will pay up to NIS 12 for multiple trips on the same day, while a single trip along the entire line will cost NIS 12.

Validation of the light rail trip will allow continued trips on buses of up to 90 minutes from the date of validation.

It is not possible to validate the trip on the train, but only before boarding it. The users of the multi-line card will validate the card at a validation station located at the elevated station, or they will go through a validation gate like in Israel Railways in the underground stations, where the app owners will also validate.

Unlike buses, validation in applications will not be done by scanning a QR code, but in the application itself while selecting the “Dankel” option. The application will generate a QR code that is used for both boarding and alighting at an underground station and is used for inspection by the travel inspectors during the ride. If the charge is made at a station where it is possible to travel more than 15 kilometers, the user will choose the drop-off station and will be charged accordingly.

In some of the stations, ticket machines have been installed that also allow the loading of Rab-Ko with a credit card, multi-participant validation and the purchase of Rab-Ko anonymously.

the travel experience

The underground stations now include restrooms – 1 for men and 2 for women, and include air conditioning. Entering and exiting them is via validation devices like the Israel Railways, to which Nitzan attaches the multi-line card or scans a code in a travel application. There are no benches for sitting at these stations.

At this point, the frequency of the trains will be a trip every 6 minutes in the underground part and it will reach an average speed of only about 30 km/h. You can feel the braking and acceleration mainly in the surface part, as fire in the underground part is smoother. In about a year, the train should go up to the frequency of a train every 90 seconds in the underground part and shorten to a period of 3.5 minutes for all stations.

Each train can accommodate up to 450 passengers, with some standing. In the first month of operation, flight attendants will be available to passengers to facilitate orientation in the new service.
