In Vienna, advance registrations for the Covid vaccination with the protein vaccine from Novavax are now possible. Interested parties can make a note on “impfservice.wien” and on the health hotline 1450, as the office of City Councilor for Health Peter Hacker (SPÖ) announced on Wednesday. It is not clear when the stitch actually takes place. The start is dependent on deliveries to Austria, it is said.
As soon as the vaccine is available, those reserved will be informed by SMS or email that they can register for a specific appointment. The Novavax serum was approved as the fifth corona vaccine in Austria last month, for people aged 18 and over. The protein vaccine contains the SARS-CoV-2 virus-like particles with corona protein (“spike protein”). This is supposed to stimulate the immune system to develop defenses against infection.
Only biotechnologically produced spike surface protein is contained as antigen. It is not a classic dead vaccine. These consist of killed whole virus particles with several protein components. However, parts of the as yet unvaccinated population wanted to wait for the Novavax vaccine and not be vaccinated with the mRNA or vector vaccines available to date.
According to current information, two vaccine doses are required for basic immunization and are administered three weeks apart. In Vienna, vaccinations are carried out both in city vaccination streets and by doctors in private practice.
According to the Ministry of Health, Austria ordered 750,000 doses of Novavax for the first quarter of 2022. The arrival of the first contingents was last announced for the end of January. “I am pleased that we will soon have an additional vaccine with Novavax. The reservation helps us to better estimate the required amount and to organize the vaccinations in the usual good quality”, stressed City Councilor for Health Hacker.
