On the left, the summer break has not calmed things down. A week before the start of their respective summer universities in Valence and Blois, Jean-Luc Mélenchon and Olivier Faure, two of the main chefs of the Nupes, renewed the dialogue in a muscular way this Thursday, August 17. It all started with a message, at first sight harmless, from the First Secretary of the PS, who, at midday, reacted on X (ex-Twitter) to the support displayed by Nicolas Sarkozy for Gérald Darmanin. “Hostilities on the right have only just begun. To the left and to environmentalists not to fall into the deadly spiral of division, ”urges the socialist deputy.
On reading it, the blood of the three-time presidential candidate seems to have run aground. “Incorrigible doublespeak! Unite by dividing in senatorial and European elections? indignantly the leader of the Insoumis, a few minutes later. An allusion to the end of inadmissibility opposed by the socialists, ecologists and communists to the supported requests of LFI for a single list in the European ballot of June 2024 and of one or two seats in the Senate, during the renewal at the end of September.

This new episode illustrates the deterioration of relations between the two men who had become particularly close last year. At the beginning of June, faced with the insistence of the Insoumis to demand a list of union with the Europeans, Faure had already raised the tone: “neither blackmail, nor injunction but respect”, he had claimed in Le Parisien. Since then, the socialist has repeatedly dissociated himself from the tribune, especially during the riots. At the end of July, it was Mélenchon who publicly reprimanded the PS boss, accusing him of giving “disastrous advice” after a post in which the latter relativized the division of the Spanish left in the legislative elections.
Mélenchon clearly accuses his partners of wanting to scuttle the union. “The reasons why these three parties (Socialist Party, Communist Party, EELV) bury the Nupes more or less frankly are of a totally convergent nature. It is for them to defend their brand on what they consider to be a market”, he torpedoed on they are blog July 26.
