Kannur: Ponnan Shameer, who was assaulted by the police on the Kannur Maveli Express, was brought to Kannur. Shamir said he did not remember being beaten by police on the train. The ticket was taken. But I do not remember if it was a general ticket. Shamir said he boarded the train under the influence of alcohol. After Vadakara was dropped off by the police, Shamir stayed there that day and boarded another train the next day to get off at Kozhikode. No arrests have been made as there are currently no warrants against Shamir, who has a criminal background.

After recording Shamir’s statement, he will be taken to Koothuparambu’s house. Family members were told to reach the police station. But when they reported the inconvenience, the police themselves took Shamir to Koothuparamba. Shameer was found on Kozhikode Link Road this morning after a two-day investigation. The Railway Police identified the victim as Ponnan Shamir, a native of Koothuparamba Nirmalagiri. He was convicted of theft and has been charged with two counts of assault.

A relative who saw his photo in the newspaper informed the Kannur Railway Police Station. Subsequent examination revealed that Shamir had a criminal background. The 50-year-old was sentenced in 2001 to three years in prison for seizing a woman’s necklace. He was later acquitted by a court of law after a 17-year-old cousin was deported in 2010 on a complaint from relatives.

In 2014 and 2016, he was involved in two assault cases at the Koothuparamba bus stand and near the bar. These cases are being tried. He lives with his wife Irukkur in Ayipuzha. His relatives had informed the police that he had not been coming home for a few days. The ADGP had suspended ASI Pramod for kicking Shamir in the boot.
