Rameswaram Holds Fishermen’s Welfare Conference: Chief Minister Stalin Makes Important Announcements

Rameswaram witnessed the inauguration of the Fishermen’s Welfare Conference, where Chief Minister Stalin addressed the crowd. In an unprecedented move, this conference aimed to bridge the gap between fishermen’s associations and government representatives. Speaking at the event, Stalin highlighted the significance of the sea in connecting Tamil Nadu with the world and acknowledged the state’s rank of 5th in India’s fishing industry.

Under the DMK regime, numerous schemes were implemented over the past two years to enhance the welfare of fishermen. Notably, the Department of Fisheries was renamed as the Department of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare. In one initiative, a relief of Rs.62 crore was distributed among 2.07 lakh fishermen across 14 coastal districts.

As part of the conference, Stalin announced several important measures for the fishermen’s community. Firstly, a total of 5,035 people will receive patta (legal documentation) for their house construction projects. Additionally, 45,000 individuals will be granted cooperative loans to support the fishing industry.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister emphasized the enhancement of relief provided during fishing bans. Previously, each family received Rs.5000; however, this amount will now be increased to Rs.8000 as promised in the DMK’s election manifesto. Moreover, 15,000 senior fishermen above the age of 60 will be entitled to relief during these bans.

In a bid to modernize fishing practices, Stalin revealed that 1000 country boat fishermen would receive machinery with a 40 percent subsidy. Additionally, the allocation of subsidized kerosene will be increased to 3,700 liters for registered country boat owners in Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari districts. Similarly, the subsidized diesel quota will be raised to 19,000 liters for barges and 4,400 liters for motorized boats.

The conference also addressed infrastructure developments. Survey work has already commenced for the Thangachimadam fishing port, while the initiation of bait netting work in Pampan North fishing village has been ordered.

Recognizing the risks associated with fishing, the government has prioritized the safety of fishermen. As part of the Fishermen’s Accident Insurance Scheme, 205 families will receive relief, and 25 families will be provided a revolving fund for those who go missing while fishing.

Moreover, the government has increased the allowance under the housing scheme for fishermen, raising it from Rs.1.7 lakh to Rs.2.4 lakh.

Addressing concerns of fishing villages facing sea erosion, Stalin acknowledged the need for bait ramps to ensure the safety of boats. However, due to an ongoing case in the National Green Tribunal, immediate completion of these projects is hindered. Nevertheless, the government intends to commence construction wherever possible after acquiring the necessary approvals through the Coastal Management Plan.

Overall, these measures are expected to benefit a significant number of fishermen, with a total allocation of Rs.926.88 crore. Chief Minister Stalin concluded his speech with an assurance of the government’s commitment to the welfare of Tamil Nadu’s fishermen.
