The US pharmaceutical company Moderna announced on Thursday that, according to an initial study, its updated corona vaccine is effective against the “Eris” subvariant.
The company now expects to launch the new vaccine in time for the fall vaccination season. However, approval from the regulatory authorities is still pending.
Moderna, as well as vaccine makers Novavax and Pfizer, have worked with Biontech SE to develop versions of their vaccines that target the Eris subvariants. Shortly before, the pharmaceutical company Pfizer had reported that its revised vaccine had been effective against Eris in a study with mice.
Eris is the nickname for EG.5 and is similar to the XBB.1.5 variant, a subvariant of the still dominant Omicron variant. The World Health Organization (WHO) has upgraded the new mutation of the coronavirus EG.5 (Eris) and put it under increased surveillance.
