Department of Medicine by Metta Pracharak Hospital (Wat Rai Khing) recommends taking care of eye health during the rainy season, as the chance of eye-related diseases increases. While increased fever is a common health concern during this season, it is important not to overlook allergic symptoms such as conjunctivitis. Bacteria, viruses, and allergies can lead to highly infectious eye conditions, and any abnormal symptoms should be promptly brought to the attention of an ophthalmologist.

Dr. Phairot Surachavanich, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Medical Services, emphasized the need for strict health care during the rainy season. Maintaining a healthy body that can adapt and remain immune to weather changes is crucial. Additionally, he advised that proper nutrition, including a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, is essential in strengthening the immune system and effectively dealing with diseases during this time.

Dr. Arkhom Chaiweerawatana, Director of Metta Pracharak Hospital (Wat Rai Khing), highlighted the increased risk of eye conditions during the rainy season. The humid and cooler weather provides a suitable environment for the growth of pathogens. Those with weaker immune systems are more susceptible to sicknesses during this season, including eye-related diseases. The “red eye disease” is particularly common during the rainy season due to the splashing of rainwater containing dust, viruses, or bacteria into the eyes, leading to severe inflammation, eye irritation, and blurred vision. Urgent consultation with an ophthalmologist is advised if any abnormal eye symptoms occur.

Dr. Ekachai Aryangkun, Ophthalmologist and Deputy Director of Ophthalmology, also emphasized the importance of eye health during the rainy season. Germs and infectious diseases, especially conjunctivitis or “red eye” outbreaks, are prevalent during this time. Conjunctivitis can be caused by dirty water splashing into the eyes or touching the eyes with hands soiled with dirt. Depending on the cause, symptoms may include swollen eyelids, excessive tearing, swollen lymph nodes, coughing, sore throat, runny nose, light sensitivity, green or yellow discharge, watery eyes, blurred vision, itching, burning, and tears caused by allergies.

To prevent conjunctivitis, it is advised to avoid close contact with sick individuals and refrain from sharing personal items such as handkerchiefs and towels. Dust and dirty water should also be avoided, while swimming during conjunctivitis outbreaks should be refrained from. Maintaining cleanliness, washing hands regularly, avoiding frequent eye touching, and wearing sunglasses for protection against dust and wind are recommended. Care should be taken to prevent insects or foreign objects from entering the eyes. In the case of conjunctivitis, rest and taking a leave of absence are recommended to reduce the spread of the disease. Artificial tears can help with eye irritation, and further treatment should be sought from an ophthalmologist if necessary.

By following these preventative measures and seeking timely medical attention when needed, individuals can protect their eyes and overall health during the rainy season.]
