The journalist Christian Zurita will be a presidential candidate for the party of the murdered Villavicencio

Four days after the murder of Fernando Villavicenciohe Movement Builds this Sunday named the journalist Christian Zurita as its candidate for the presidential elections to be held on August 20.

A little over 11 years ago, Zurita was, together with Juan Carlos Calderón, one of the journalists denounced by then President Rafael Correa for the book entitled “El Gran Hermano” in which it was indicated that the president was aware of the contracts signed by his brother Fabricio with some public institutions.

Shortly after the judicial sentence that forced them to pay compensation of two million dollars (1.5 million euros at that time), Zurita gave an interview to Libertad Digital in which he clearly pointed out the difficult situation that journalism was going through in Ecuador “correista”. He then said that it was necessary “to show all the necessary resistance and coherence and to do the best of journalism so as not to faint.”

Now Zurita has a new opportunity to continue fighting against the left embodied in Ecuador by Correa after having been designated by the Construye Movement as Villavicencio’s successor in the presidential candidacy, keeping as running mate Andrea González Náderwho was initially chosen by the party to be the candidate but the request was rejected by the electoral authority.

In a press conference after the movement’s decision and to which he appeared wearing a bulletproof vest, Zurita, who was a Villavicencio collaborator for 15 years, said that “we could not allow under any circumstances that Fernando not be present after his atrocious and vile crime can be lost”. Furthermore, he pointed out that “your ideas are fully intact” and promised to defend them: “We are going to try to emulate their capacity and emulate their name”, while stressing as one of the red lines that they are not going to sit down to negotiate with “any mafia”.
