The WhatsApp chats of Valentina Cancela’s femicide before admitting that he had murdered her.
Last Tuesday, before she disappeared, 17-year-old Valentina Cancela sent a message to her private English teacher to let her know that she would not be coming to class that day after finishing school. Valentina was in the 5th grade of the Punta del Este High School and she studied focused on science, which she had been passionate about since she was a child.
The girl did not imagine that her ex-boyfriend, also 17, had summoned to kill him. He had beaten her in the past and at least two domestic violence charges had been filed against him.
After she met him on a descent from Playa Brava in Punta del Este, she stopped answering messages. Her parents and her friends began to desperately search for her and, immediately, the ex-boyfriend jumped out as her main suspect. The suspicions were not unfounded or wrong. Valentina drowned, according to the most recent data from the Prosecutor’s Office, after the autopsy.
From suspect to confessed femicide: she pretended not to know anything when they were looking for her
On Wednesday, the young man whose name has the initials SG (and who should not be published because he is a minor) was taken to testify at the local police headquarters. At about 3:30 p.m. and after being questioned for a while, he confessed to his father that he had murdered his ex-girlfriend by means of mechanical asphyxiation.
In the confession signed by the femicideHe narrated that he killed him in a dune by squeezing his neck until he stopped breathing. Half an hour after admitting her crime, the family lawyer arrived and he rectified what he had said: he had made an appointment with her, they talked on the beach, they ended up arguing and he had ended the life of the innocent young woman.
Subsequently, he agreed to take the police to the place where he had buried the body, on a dune in Playa Brava.
But, going back in time, the murderer, one of the youngest femicides in the history of Uruguay, I had pretended not to know anythingas seen in viralized WhatsApp chats.
A friend of Valentina identified as “Isa” wrote to the young man asking if he was with “Valu”, as all his relatives affectionately called him. “I’m at home,” replied the young man. “Are you sure?” Isa asked him, to which he replied: “Yes, stupid.”
Isa was asking for Valentina, because her mother was desperately looking for her. “Why am I writing to you (…) Does he not answer you either?” (sic), the femicide responded again, trying to make the girl believe that she knew nothing about her ex-girlfriend. “She doesn’t answer her mother,” Isa finished writing for a while, at 4:34 p.m.
To try to continue building the scaffolding of his alibi, the murderer asked if Valentina had already responded. But it began to raise doubts. “San **** (we censored her name for being a minor), are you with her?” Isa questioned him again.
“No,” he replied, with a photo in which he is seen smiling and showing his hand with his thumb up. “I’m at home,” he replied.
He remarked that he was at home with his father, and continued asking for “news” from Valentina, as if he knew nothing. “Isa, let’s go find her,” she wrote at 6:37 p.m. «I am in Montevideo. I’m shaking, »said she Isa, affected by everything.
“I think I was the last person Isa saw her,” he said at 6:41 p.m.
“When did you see her? SAN**** WHEN DID YOU SEE HER?», Isa wrote to him again. “I saw her about one o’clock,” she replied. But Isa didn’t believe him. “Lie,” she finished him off. According to him, after that she “stopped responding to messages.”
The confession of the femicide, witnesses who saw them together a while before the disappearance, footage from the departmental security cameras, make up a case for which the prosecutor, Jorge Vaz, according to what he presented before the judge of Violence against Women based on in Gender of 2nd Turn of San Carlos, María Carolina Bird Gorozurreta, demands the maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
