The governor of Hawaii, John Green promised today (Thursday) that he will protect property owners in Maui from opportunistic buyers after the fires that destroyed entire communities on the island and claimed the lives of over 100 people.

“I intend to make sure that no one becomes a victim of land robbery,” Green said at a press conference, “People right now are traumatized, don’t approach them with an offer to buy their land. Don’t approach their families, under the pretext that they are ready to make a deal with you. We will not allow that “.

In addition to this, Green announced that he had instructed the Attorney General to act to impose a moratorium (stay) on real estate transactions in Lahaina, the city at the epicenter of the fires and neighborhoods where they were completely burned. However, Green admitted that such a step could face legal difficulties.

The governor pledged to announce the details of the moratorium by Friday, adding that he is interested in promoting a long-term moratorium on real estate transactions “that are not beneficial to the local population,” as he said. Affordable housing was a central part of his inauguration in January, when over a billion dollars have been invested since then in housing programs.

On Wednesday, the number of victims from the fires that hit the island of Maui last week rose to 111. This is the deadliest natural disaster to hit the country in decades. According to the evidence, poor preparation and lack of manpower probably increased the dimensions of the disaster. Many survivors testified that they did not hear any warning sirens or were given advance warning to prepare for the disaster, and realized that they were in danger only when they saw the flames approaching.
