August 19, 1991 In 2010, an attempted coup d’état in the USSR took place in Moscow: the conspirators (the so-called GKChP) removed from power President Mikhail Gorbachev and announced the introduction of a state of emergency.
In Minsk, deputies of the BNF Opposition adopted a statement condemning the putsch, demanding to convene an extraordinary session of the Supreme Soviet. In the evening, the Belarusian People’s Front held a protest rally on the square in front of the Government House.
