Some 120 demonstrators took part, on Saturday August 19, in a march organized in Carnac (Morbihan), in memory of menhirs whose destruction, to make way for a DIY store, had sparked a lively controversy at the start of the summer.

The procession, accompanied by traditional Breton instruments and with many white and black flags with ermines, carried a coffin containing five false monoliths, behind a banner proclaiming: “the menhirs of Carnac in mourning”.

The demonstration, part of the famous alignments of menhirs, was organized by a collective called “Rising of the Stones”with the stated objective of “defense of historical and environmental heritage in Carnac”. This network notably includes in its ranks the Morbihannais navigator Eugène Riguidel, 82, who was present on Saturday and spoke in front of the “giant of Manio”, the largest menhir of the alignments.

While the vagueness persists on the potential destruction or displacement of the standing stones, justice is interested in the case. Seizure of a complaint against X of the Koun Breizh association (“Breton memory”) denouncing a “deliberate destruction of archaeological heritage”the Lorient prosecutor’s office opened an investigation in mid-June.
