The call for the construction of the first Oncology Center of the MSP began – Ministry of Public Health

The Ministry of Public Health (MSP) plans the construction of a new Cancer Hospital in Quito. Its infrastructure will be part of the Eugenio Espejo Specialty Hospital in the center of the capital.

This August 17, 2023, the Hospital de Especialidades Eugenio Espejo (HEEE) made a public call for the start of the “Consultancy for Comprehensive Intervention of the Physical Infrastructure and Construction of the Cancer Center”.

The project for the construction of the new Oncology Tower estimates to increase care to more than four thousand patients per semester in addition to regular care and thus avoid referrals for treatments of this type. The Oncology service treated 17,253 patients in the first half of 2023.

In turn, the hospital is currently part of the Micro Oncology Network of zone 9, corresponding to the Metropolitan District of Quito, which aims to coordinate with the other levels (first and second) timely care for the population with cancer and improve in a 30% their quality of life and chance of survival.

Additionally, the project contemplates the analysis of the infrastructure of the Eugenio Espejo hospitalization area that has been built for more than 40 years, which, being a Third Level Care center and a national reference, must be projected to the new demand of the system. national health and the needs of patients.

This study will allow us to know the current state of the physical infrastructure to develop a hospital design that promotes efficient and quality care for patients suffering from some type of cancer, who will be able to access services with high-tech equipment, and thus be able to to provide an adequate, innovative service, and for the hospital to position itself as a state-of-the-art public establishment in Latin America.
