MADRID, 19 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Government of Morocco has had to come out this Saturday in the face of information from the South African authorities that pointed to its historic attendance at the summit of the countries of the BRICS group that is being held next week in Johannesburg, and has taken the opportunity to categorically reject their possible incorporation into the collective in the midst of strong diplomatic tensions with the host country.

The South African Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Naledi Pandor, assured in a press conference on August 7 about the upcoming BRICS summit that 23 countries, including Morocco, had submitted formal applications to join the group led by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

In response, the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has made it known that “it has never considered accepting an invitation that has come out unilaterally,” according to sources from the ministry to the official news agency of the Alaouite kingdom, MAP. In fact, relations between Morocco and South Africa are frozen because the South African authorities do not recognize the Moroccan declaration of sovereignty over Western Sahara.

“South Africa”, indicate the foreign sources, “has always shown principled hostility towards Morocco and has systematically adopted a negative and dogmatic position on the question of the Moroccan Sahara”, in addition to “multiplying at the national level and within the African Union , notoriously malevolent acts against the highest interests of Morocco”.

The meeting will take place from August 22 to 24 in the South African city with such prominent participants as the President of China, Xi Jinping.
