For frugal people: how much house do you really need?

Anyone who already uses a basement, attic or other storage space as a tenant knows how quickly they fill up. Boxes are stacked with countless things that you want to use, repair or sell at some point, along with other space hogs. But when buying a house, everyone should honestly ask themselves: does that have to be all? A basement makes the house more expensive. “Certain things can also be shared with neighbors,” advises Benedikt Bosch, partner in the Tuttlingen architects’ office Yonder. Bosch also puts the size and number of children’s rooms and the use of a guest room up for discussion.

The architect from Tuttlingen encourages the inclusion of smaller houses in the search profile. “You don’t need a lot of space to create beautiful spaces,” he says. The residents should consider how the square meters can be used sensibly. “In the bedroom, for example, the bed has to have space, but the storage space could be somewhere else,” the architect suggests. Or the living area could overlap with the dining and cooking area. In small houses, some areas could be used more than once with clever storage spaces, including hallways and stairwells.
