Chennai: The star turtles that were to be smuggled to Malaysia have been confiscated by the Chennai Freight Air Customs Department based on the confidential information received by the mining authorities.

A search by customs officials revealed that the shipment of 230 kg of live crabs had been documented and planned to smuggle live star tortoises in return.

Accordingly, 1,364 star turtles were found alive in 7 of the 13 parcels to be exported, and customs officials said such creatures were banned from being exported abroad.

According to the Wildlife Conservation Act 1972, the confiscated star tortoises have been handed over to the Tamil Nadu Forest Department to ensure rehabilitation and natural habitat, Customs officials said, adding that an investigation is underway into the identities of those involved in the smuggling.
