General Jean-Louis Georgelin, former Chief of Staff of the French Armed Forces and head of the restoration project for Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, died Friday night at the age of 74 while hiking in the Pyrenees ( southwest of France), published on Saturday by the prosecutor’s office to AFP.

The high mountain gendarmerie was alerted on Friday night by the guard at the Estagnous refuge, at an altitude of 2,246 meters, who informed them that a hiker had not returned, the prosecution distinguished, adding that the general was hiking alone, according to The first conclusions of the investigation.
The gendarmes flew to the scene by helicopter and found “the body of a man who has been formally identified as General Georgelin”, a representative of the prosecution said, adding that accidental death was the most likely explanation and that an investigation was opened to clarify what happened.
A five-star general, Georgelin was born on August 30, 1948 in Aspet (southwest). Chief of the General Staff of the French Armed Forces between 2006 and 2010, he oversaw operations in the Ivory Coast, Afghanistan, the Balkans and Lebanon.
After the fire that devastated the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral on April 15, 2019, President Emmanuel Macron brought him back to life to lead the reconstruction of this monument and to drive forward this extremely complex project with determination.
