MADRID, 20 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Government of Nicaragua has seized the homes of the Jesuit community in Managua after the legal cancellation of the Central American University (UCA), accused of being a focus of protests against the authorities.

“The Police appeared together with members of the judiciary at the Jesuits’ house, the Villa del Carmen residence, to demand their eviction, arguing that this house is also owned by the Government,” reads a statement from the Jesuits sent by the Society of Jesus in Spain.

The Nicaraguan Jesuit community showed the Nicaraguan Police the relevant deed and ownership documentation for the property, which is located on UCA land, but is owned by the Society of Jesus, although the agents “did not pay attention” and ordered the religious “leave the house and all their belongings”.

The religious “withdrew from the house and marched to the community of San Ignacio de Managua, where they have all arrived without further mishaps.” The Society of Jesus in Central America has condemned this “outrage” against the community on the social network X, formerly Twitter.

The UCA was intervened this week by the Government of Nicaragua, which described the institution as “a center for terrorists”, in the framework of its accusations against the Catholic Church for instigating a social revolt in 2018 that the Ortega Government described as “a failed coup d’état.

Managua has dissolved 26 universities this year by withdrawing the legal personality of several of these institutions, in what is considered a repressive measure by the authorities, who have also closed political parties and non-governmental organizations.
