What else speaks for Ariane is, on the one hand, Europe’s independence in the field of space travel, i.e. “safe access to space, independent of other countries and companies,” says Königsmann. On the other hand, European cooperation: “Strengthening the European idea is something else. That doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with space travel, but it’s also an argument.”

But from a commercial point of view, Europe relies on outdated technology, believes Königsmann. “If there are reusable rockets, then disposable rockets will no longer be competitive,” says the aerospace engineer. “It’s just difficult to fund it. Why take an expensive disposable rocket when you can get a cheap, sustainable and reusable one?”
