In 2018, Javier Fesser gave the bell with ‘Campeones’, which had the exact doses of truth, complicity, humor and emotion. It was a phenomenon beyond the cinematographic, an example of how to visualize and normalize people with different disabilities (or “diverse abilities”). Above or below their difficulties and conditioning factors, that group of young people was cheeky, lively and fun. Impossible not to love them.

Five years later, Fesser has not resisted making a sequel. And it is a pleasure to meet again with ‘friends’ and spend another time between his enthusiasm, his unexpected outings and his vision of our world. All this while the modest basketball team randomly transforms into an athletics team and ends up involved in a video game competition that mixes the real and the virtual.
The pity is that ‘Campeonex’ is one of those sequels that falls short of its original referent. To this contributes the fact that the disjointed script gives a lot of space to the character of the new coach, a girl who seems to be jinxed (well played by Elisa Hipólito, daughter of the actors Carlos Hipólito and Mapi Sagaseta) and a lot, too much time for the section in which ‘the friends’ play the final of the video game, obscured between the lights and shadows of a pavilion and the artificial spectacularity of a game about whose rules the ‘speakers’ of the test have to inform us.
Thus, the film neglects its protagonists a bit, somewhat blurred between simple jokes and virtual images. The addition of a new character works, Brianeitor, the wheelchair player, the general tone is pleasant and ‘Campeonex’ maintains the same values as its predecessor, but it doesn’t deserve the medal.
