New ‘Pub Owner’ Takes Over at the Alzheimer Café in Leiden
Marleen Dohmen has been announced as the new ‘bar owner’ of the popular Alzheimer café in Leiden, Leiderdorp, and Oegstgeest. With a new season starting, Dohmen is excited to bring her expertise and passion to the role.
The Alzheimer café has been a beloved institution in the area for over 25 years, offering a cozy and informal atmosphere for discussing various themes related to Alzheimer’s disease. Dohmen, a researcher at Leyden Academy on Vitality and Aging, is no stranger to the subject, as she conducts research at Topaz on the relationship between healthcare professionals, informal carers, and nursing home residents.
Dohmen will be making her debut as the ‘pub owner’ during the September edition of the Alzheimer café, which will focus on the theme ‘I have dementia. What now?’ This theme aims to address the questions and concerns of individuals who have recently been diagnosed with dementia, as well as their loved ones. The guest speaker for the evening will be geriatric specialist Stefan de Vroome, who will provide insights into appropriate care and available support.
Dohmen is particularly looking forward to the November edition, which will explore the topic of ‘Intimacy and relationships’. This theme aligns with her ongoing research on mutual relationships in nursing homes and will delve into the changes in relationships, love, sexuality, and intimacy that occur when someone develops dementia.
Another important theme on the agenda this season is ‘Dementia in the family’, which will be discussed in December. This topic focuses on individuals who develop dementia at a young age and face unique challenges related to work and caregiving responsibilities.
