The Barcelona Port Authority (spain) has managed to handle a total of 38 million tons of merchandise up to the month of July. Among the most notable types of cargo is the increase in new vehicle traffic, which has registered a total of 482,904 units, marking a large increase of 67.4%.

On the other hand, bulk solids have also stood out with the movement of 3 million tons and a growth of 15.9% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Freight traffic in the Port of Barcelona this year is in harmony with the current economic context, characterized by world trade damaged by geopolitical tensions, such as the war in Ukraine, high inflation, tightening of monetary policies and uncertainty in financial markets. In these circumstances, the main economies have experienced slowdowns in their growth.

Regarding container traffic, the Port of Barcelona has moved 1.89 million TEUs between January and July of this year, reducing its activity by 10.6% compared to the same period in 2022. However, the increase in traffic stands out cabotage, with 21.3% more in full containers (70,817 TEUs). This improvement is due to the good Spanish economic situation in relation to the rest of the European Union.

In relation to bulk cargo, in the case of liquids, the movement has reached 7.7 million tons, representing a drop of 18.7%. This is mainly due to the decrease in hydrocarbon transits and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) imports, due to full tanks and lower demand.

Regarding bulk solids, the 15.9% increase is due to the good performance of cement and salt exports, as well as cereal and flour imports.

In addition to obtaining good results, the Catalan enclave is empowered with more efficient tools. And it is that, the Government has approved the assignment of 3.9 million euros to APM Terminals Barcelona, through the Moves Singular Projects II Program for Efficient and Sustainable Mobility, to support part of the pilot project that will electrify the handling equipment of containers, which estimates a drop of 821 tons of CO2 emissions per year.
