AI-Based System Uses X-Rays to Estimate Age and Detect Diseases
Scientists at Osaka Metropolitan University in Japan have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) model that can accurately estimate a person’s age based on chest X-ray images. The system also has the ability to recognize deviations from a healthy individual’s X-ray and identify early signals of chronic diseases. The AI estimates the age of those affected to be higher than it actually is, which can provide indications of illnesses.
The researchers believe that this breakthrough could significantly enhance early disease detection and monitoring. By locating biomarkers that indicate premature aging, the system could allow for better control and treatment of diseases. In their study, the research team trained the AI model using over 67,000 X-rays of healthy individuals and then applied it to X-ray images of patients with known diseases.
The results showed a high level of accuracy in estimating the age of healthy individuals, with a correlation coefficient of 0.95 between the AI’s estimation and the actual age. When analyzing X-rays of patients with diseases such as high blood pressure, high uric acid levels, or chronic lung disease, the AI’s age estimation compared to the chronological age indicated the likelihood of these diseases.
The implications of this research extend beyond age estimation, as it opens up possibilities for assessing the severity of chronic diseases, predicting life expectancy, and anticipating potential surgical complications. The study was published in The Lancet Healthy Longevity journal.
