WHO creates a new global initiative to boost digital health

The G20 Group made up of the world’s most powerful nations announced a new mutual collaboration for the benefit of health.
From telemedicine to Artificial Intelligence and the metaverse are some modalities that are on the rise.
Since the Covid-19 pandemic, there has been an acceleration in the use of digital tools within health.

Technology has generated change in all aspects of life and it is impossible to stay away from the transformation. For the same, the digital health It is a subject of great relevance that must be analyzed for all its implications. Its impact is not only direct for patients but also for physicians and the personnel in charge of providing care.

With this in mind, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Chair of the G20 Group announced the new Global Initiative on Digital Health (GIDH).

What is the goal?

This new project will function as a WHO-managed network and platform to bring together and harmonize global standards, best practices, and resources to accelerate the digital transformation of the health system.

The director of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom, assured that mutual support and collaboration are necessary to achieve together what no country could do alone. He added that he is committed to working with nations in search of strengthening their capacities and improving access to digital solutions of guaranteed quality for a healthier, safer and fairer future.

“Today is a momentous day in the history of the Health Task Force because the countries of the Group of 20 have not only realized the paramount importance of the initiative but have collectively worked towards its implementation,” said Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, who is the Prime Minister of Health of India.

In this sense, it is necessary to remember that the first WHO resolution on this issue was issued in 2005. Since then, more than 120 Member States have developed a national policy or strategy for its application.

Although recent experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic have led to a boost in digital tools. Therefore it is a trend that cannot be changed or avoided.

Objectives of the new GIDH initiative

The GIDH aims to bring countries and partners together to achieve measurable results through:

The development of clear investment plans based on priorities for the transformation of digital health. Improved reporting and transparency in relation to digital health resources. Facilitating knowledge sharing and collaboration across regions and countries to accelerate progress. Support for whole-of-government approaches to digital health governance in countries. Increased technical and financial support for the implementation of the Global Strategy on Digital Health 2020-2025 and its next phase.

WHO and partners announced substantial multi-stakeholder cash and in-kind commitments to support the rollout of this new initiative.
