In Greece, fire ravages nature and endangers people. The country is fighting a new wave of deadly fires on Tuesday, the second in the space of a month, which has already killed two people. Uncontrolled flames are raging in the northeast of the country, the islands of Euboea and Kythnos, as well as in the region of Boeotia north of Athens, with a dangerous mix of strong winds and temperatures of up to 41 ° vs. “There are nine active fronts,” reported a fire department spokesperson.

Greek firefighters have also ordered the evacuation of a district located in the north of Athens. Tens of thousands of people are called to leave the district of Ano Liosia, which adjoins that of Fyli where an AFP journalist saw houses on fire.

Violent fires since July

The flames also threatened Dadia National Park in the north of the country where a body, believed to be that of an undocumented migrant, was discovered on Monday evening. Since then, 17 other bodies of suspected migrants have been found in the park, located near the Turkish border. An elderly shepherd was also found dead earlier Monday in Boeotia.

The European Union has announced that it is deploying two Cyprus-based firefighting aircraft and a Romanian firefighting team through the EU’s Civil Protection Mechanism. Very hot and dry conditions, which increase the risk of fires, will persist in Greece until Friday, according to the meteorological services.

On July 18, a fire fanned by strong winds had ravaged nearly 17,770 hectares in ten days in the south of Rhodes, a popular tourist island in the southeast of the Aegean Sea.
