The Port of Barcelona has opened the tender to build the new electrical substation with which it will electrify the docks and reduce emissions from port activity. The entity has reported that the budget for the work is €14 million which include the drafting of the project, the management and execution of the works, the maintenance and operation of the substation for two years.
To start with the works, the Port has put out the construction tender this Tuesday, August 22, and the work is expected to end in 2025 by “the same company that will take charge of the whole project.” According to the Port, when all cruise berths, the Prat dock and the ferry terminals at the Sant Bertran dock and the Costa dock are electrified, 66,000 tons of CO2 will be eliminated y 1,234 tons of NOx of emissions from port activity.
Approved by the Board of Directors of the Port of Barcelona in February and authorized by the Council of Ministers in July, this auction also secure connection with the future Cerdà substation of Red Eléctrica de España through an underground high voltage line.
In parallel, it will build the medium voltage network that will unite this equipment with the different terminals, including the docks of Energy y Semi-detached. It will also electrify all cruise terminals (where you can connect up to six ships simultaneously) and the future ferry terminal.

This new substation, explained the Port, will make the nexigen project for the electrification of the docks, in which the port enclave intends to invest, in the first phases, some 130 million euros to decarbonize port activity and improve air quality.
The new substation “will be the key element on which the energy transition of the Port of Barcelona: arriving ships will be able to stop their auxiliary engines and run on clean energy with a certificate of origin 100% renewable.
