Dengue Cases on the Rise: Ministry of Public Health Concerned

The Ministry of Public Health has released alarming new data on the prevalence of dengue fever, revealing that the number of patients has tripled compared to the previous year. This news comes as the country enters the rainy season, creating a favorable breeding ground for mosquitoes that carry the disease.

Dr. Tares Krassanirawiwong, the Director General of the Department of Disease Control, issued a warning to the public, stating that if a fever lasts for more than two days, it should be suspected as dengue fever and medical attention should be sought immediately. Dr. Krassanirawiwong emphasized the importance of not self-medicating, as this can increase the risk of death.

As of August 16, 2023, there have been a staggering 65,552 reported cases of dengue fever, representing an increase of over 5,000 cases per week. Tragically, 58 people have already lost their lives to the disease. The increase in cases has been attributed to a reduction in the natural immunity of the population and the presence of more containers and water sources where mosquitoes can breed.

Dengue fever does not discriminate based on age or occupation, with patients found across all demographics. The provinces with the highest rates of infection over the past four weeks have been identified as Chiang Rai, Nan, Chanthaburi, Trat, and Rayong. However, the Department of Disease Control has warned that outbreaks are still occurring in other areas.

To combat the spread of dengue fever, the Department of Disease Control has implemented various measures. A weekly meeting of the Incident Command Center has been established, bringing together central and regional networks to coordinate efforts. Additionally, an emphasis has been placed on eliminating mosquito larvae breeding grounds in seven key areas, including houses, schools, hospitals, places of worship, hotels, factories, and government/private organizations.

It is important to differentiate dengue fever from other illnesses, such as influenza. Dengue fever typically presents with high fever, and it is crucial to seek a medical diagnosis promptly. Fortunately, there are now testing kits available for dengue hemorrhagic fever (NS1), which provide quick results and enable timely treatment.

With dengue fever cases on the rise, it is imperative for individuals to take preventive measures, such as using mosquito repellent, wearing protective clothing, and regularly emptying containers that may hold stagnant water. By being vigilant and proactive, the population can play a crucial role in curbing the spread of this potentially deadly disease.]
