Never had it been so hot in several cities in the south-east of France. In many municipalities, the records of the 2003 heat wave have been broken. This late heatwave episode is probably the hottest of the summer of 2023, “exceptional in its duration and intensity”, notes Météo France.

In the village of Puy-Saint-Martin east of Montélimar (Drôme), the thermometer showed 43.5 ° C in the afternoon, beating the municipal record of 2003 by one degree, according to The Weather Channel. This is also the case in Orange (Vaucluse) where 42.7°C were recorded, in Durban-Corbières (Aude) where 42.5°C were exceeded or in Valence (Drôme) where it was 40 .9°C. The Var coast has also experienced records, particularly in Cogolin (Var) where the mercury rose to 42°C, crushing the August 2003 record which was 41°C.

According to data from Météo France, Monday August 20 was the hottest day after August 15 since 1947 with an average temperature of 26.4°C. Nighttime temperatures are also exceptionally high, sometimes dropping just below 30°C.

High temperatures also on Wednesday

This Wednesday the extreme heat should continue in the Southeast and even spread. The 40°C should be crossed in the southwest with peaks at 42°C or 43°C in certain areas. According to data from the Keraunos observatory, the cities of Toulouse, Agen, Auch, Montauban, Albi and Bordeaux could break their absolute record.

For this same day, 15 new departments join the Rhône, Drôme, Ardèche and Haute-Loire on heat wave red alert: Ain, Loire, Isère, Lozère, Gard, Vaucluse, Hérault, Aveyron, Tarn, Tarn-et-Garonne, Aude, Lot, Lot-et-Garonne, Haute-Garonne and Gers.

As a reminder, the highest temperature ever recorded in France is 46°C recorded in Vérargues (Hérault) on June 28, 2019.
