The medical salary in Mexico remains below that received by their colleagues in other Latin American countries, even though they do the same activities.
From a survey it was obtained that 8 out of 10 Mexican doctors were affected by economic inflation during 2022.
Some activities for which doctors receive additional income are consulting, conferences and teaching.

To become a professional doctor requires a strong investment in time, money and effort. For this reason, when pursuing a degree, the least expected is to receive a medical living wage and that it is equivalent with the knowledge acquired. Although there are countries where it does occur, there are also others where the situation is depressing.

Only in the case of Mexico, the Bachelor of Medicine has an average duration of seven years. During that period, they must complete 12 years of internship and another 12 months of social service. There is no other race with a similar route.

However, to know the current conditions within the union, the Medscape portal presented the results of its study Medical salary report: Mexico 2023. It consisted of a survey applied to 1,147 doctors, of which 909 reported working full time.

Economic inflation decreased the income of doctors

What stands out is that eight out of 10 doctors said they were affected by the 2022 inflation because they noted that their purchasing power decreased. While in that same year 44% of income from patient care increased, 25% decreased and 31% remained stable since 2021.

For those doctors with a decrease in income, they attribute the change to the national and international financial landscape such as inflation (69% of respondents), as well as the COVID-19 pandemic (66% of respondents). Other adverse factors for those who responded that their income had decreased included the job loss, reduced hours, or reduced patient volume.

“2020 and 2021 were years that were affected financially by the pandemic. Despite the fact that inflation in Mexico was lower than expected in December 2021, compared to 2020, it continued above the ceiling of 7.00% and was at the highest level, for a year-end, which was not had seen in 21 years, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi). Therefore, it is to be expected that these factors will negatively affect the income of physicians,” said Dr. Mariana López Mejía, senior editor of the Spanish edition of Medscape.
