Tuesday August 22 was the hottest day in France after August 15, according to data provided by Météo-France. The “national thermal indicator”, which gives an average of temperatures across the country, rose to 27.1°C. And if we specify “after August 15”, it is because it is not a detail: it makes this episode a “late heat wave”, the seventh and most severe ever recorded in the country.

In this video, we explain how the “heat dome” phenomenon works, its consequences and its origins, which have everything to do with climate change, as established by the IPCC report published in 2021. The scientists there conclude that the annual number of days in a heat wave will increase by a factor of 5 to 10 by the end of the century, and that these will occur both earlier and later than before . The “heat wave season” will therefore be more and more extended and will require an adaptation of our daily life.
