Ukrainian Lawmaker Concerned Over US Republican Comments on Aid to Ukraine

Ukrainian lawmaker Lesia Vasylenko expressed concern over comments made by some US Republican presidential candidates regarding financial support for Ukraine. Vasylenko referred to these remarks as “concerning” and “upsetting,” particularly because the United States has been seen as a strong supporter of democracy.

During the inaugural debate of Republican candidates, political newcomer Vivek Ramaswamy stated that he would not back additional aid to Ukraine, describing US policy towards the country as “disastrous.” However, former ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, countered Ramaswamy’s remarks, arguing for the provision of equipment and ammunition to Ukraine.

Vasylenko emphasized the importance of US support, stating that Ukraine is fighting on the ground with its own resources and needs assistance, including weapons, fighter jets, and long-range missiles, to counter the Russian occupation in its territories.

The US has played a significant role in supporting Ukraine throughout the conflict, providing over $75 billion in humanitarian, financial, and military aid since Russia’s invasion in February 2022. The US has committed $43 billion to military assistance, compared to £4.6 billion from the UK and approximately 5.6 billion euros from the European Union.

Military supplies from the US to Ukraine have included drones, aircraft, ammunition, and heavy artillery. However, officials from the UK and US caused controversy at a NATO summit by suggesting that Ukraine should show more “gratitude” for the weaponry provided.

Ukraine launched a counteroffensive operation in Russia-occupied territories in June, but progress has been slow and challenging along the heavily fortified frontline. The Ukrainian government hopes that US-made weapons, such as F-16 jets and cluster munitions, will help boost their progress.

Vasylenko emphasized the need for more weapons, ammunition, and means to protect Ukrainian skies from the aerial attacks launched by Russia on a daily basis.

The issue of US support for Ukraine remains a topic of debate among Republican candidates, highlighting the divide within the party on this matter. As Ukraine continues to fight for democracy and territorial integrity, it seeks the support of both Republicans and Democrats in the United States.
