The Dutch Femke Bol fully assumed her status as the favorite to become world champion in the 400m hurdles, Thursday in Budapest, five days after her heavy fall in the final meters of the mixed 4x400m relay.

At 23, Bol, vice-world champion in 2022 and Olympic bronze medalist in 2021, offers her first world title, in the absence of the queen of the 400m hurdles, the American Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, who has deserted the event for the benefit of the 400 m in 2023

The Dutchman won in 51 sec 70, relegating her closest competitors to more than a second: the American Shamier Little, 52 sec 80, is the silver medalist, and the Jamaican Rushell Clayton, 52 sec 81, of bronze.

This is the gold of redemption for Bol: his unexpected fall in the final of the mixed 4x400m on Saturday evening had led to the disqualification of his team, while they were in the fight for world gold.

A month after becoming the second fastest woman in history over 400m hurdles, clocking 51.45sec in London, smashing her own European record by more than half a second, she passes for the second time under the 52 second mark.

A year ago, she had achieved the feat of becoming triple European champion in Munich, in the 400m, 400m hurdles and with the women’s 4x400m relay.

McLaughlin-Levrone (24), reigning Olympic champion and 2022 world champion by signing a breathtaking world record (50.68), chose to devote herself to the 400m in 2023. But she ended up giving up the Worlds of Budapest, even over this distance, due to a “minor problem” with one knee.
