The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights is demanding better protection from Guatemala for the newly elected President Bernardo Arevalo and his Vice-President Karin Herrera. Your safety is seriously threatened, the commission said on Thursday (local time). This included two planned attacks on Arevalo. The anti-corruption campaigner defeated former First Lady Sandra Torres by a wide margin on Sunday.

Before the run-off election, Arevalo said he expected attempts to prevent him from taking office if he won. Arevalo was only able to run in the run-off after Guatemala’s constitutional court, following international criticism, overturned a decision that would have barred the centre-left politician from the election.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights is an independent body of the Washington-based Organization of American States. The commission said it had formally asked the Guatemalan government to take precautionary measures to protect the lives of Arevalo and Herrera. She also asked the government of the Central American country to inform the commission about the measures it has taken to investigate the threats.

The government said it had taken “all necessary protective measures”. “The Commission must always speak objectively and guarantee impartiality, as unfounded statements can have consequences,” the government said.
