Buyers are paying higher premiums for quality grain than in normal years, reports German publication agrarheute.com. Prices are already showing the expected lack of quality grain. Fodder wheat is abundant, and quality grain in Germany is scarce.
“This year’s harvest is not a question of quantity, but of quality,” said Martin Courbie, managing director of German Agricultural Trade (DAH). We see a strong east-west divide – the west had to deal more with the consequences of the rain, as did northern Germany. In the east, the harvest can be harvested earlier,” sums up Courbie.
Weather conditions also negatively affect protein levels, number of cases and germination. The prospect of harvesting dry, storable grain diminishes from rain to rain. With each additional day of delay in harvesting, grain quality deteriorates and yield losses increase.
Currently, around 244 euros per ton are offered for bread wheat in the wholesale market and the export port in Hamburg. The price of A-wheat is 253 euros, which is 9 euros higher than that of bread wheat, and for E-wheat (elite) suppliers are currently receiving 259 euros per ton.
In southern Germany, the current price premium for quality wheat is even higher than in the north. At the wholesale market in Mannheim (South West Germany) this week, A-wheat (13% protein) was offered at €15 more than bread wheat (11.5% EW), and the premium for E-wheat (14% EW) compared with bread wheat it was even 35 euro euro!
At the same time, the difference in the prices between bread wheat and the abundantly available feed wheat (€205, max. 10% germination) in Mannheim is currently around €30, and A wheat is even €45 more expensive than feed wheat.
According to the latest published bulletin of the Bulgarian Ministry of Agriculture and Food, the price difference between bread wheat and feed wheat is about 10 euros or 19 BGN. Quality grain was sold as of August 9 for BGN 395/ton, and feed grain for BGN 376.
