Korat, Thailand – In the past two months, Korat has reported nearly 1,000 cases of dengue fever, prompting authorities to take urgent action to combat the spread of the disease. The local government has implemented an accelerated carpeting initiative to raise strict protection measures in all areas.

On August 26, 2023, a meeting was held at the Dong Yai Subdistrict Administrative Organization in Phimai District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. Mr. Supapimit Paorik, Deputy Governor of Nakhon Ratchasima Province, presided over the meeting, which included public health officers, village headmen, and village health volunteers. The meeting discussed the implementation of the “Korat, clean city” project, aimed at preventing the spread of dengue fever.

The decision to implement the accelerated carpeting initiative came as a result of the discovery of five dengue patients in the Dong Yai sub-district area. Additionally, between June 18 and August 12, 2023, the Disease Prevention and Control Office 9 recorded 972 dengue patients in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, with the majority of patients being children aged 10-14 years.

To combat the spread of dengue fever, Mr. Siam, a local official, has introduced three measures to raise the level of strict control. Firstly, efforts will be made to eliminate mosquito larvae breeding sites in all 32 districts. Secondly, if a dengue patient is found in any area, a war room will be opened, with the district chief, village headman, and community leaders working together to destroy Aedes aegypti larva breeding sites within 28 days. Lastly, municipalities and the SAO will announce nuisance control areas to effectively address living conditions that are favorable for the spread of dengue fever.

It is important for local officials to enforce these measures and resolve the annoyance caused by dengue fever. Any violation of the announcement of an incident control area and the discovery of a breeding ground for mosquito larvae will be met with legal consequences. Offenders may face fines of up to 20,000 baht. However, the aim is not to penalize, but rather to encourage cooperation and prevent further cases or deaths from dengue fever in the area.

The alarming rise in dengue fever cases in Korat highlights the urgency of addressing this public health issue. It is crucial for residents to follow the guidelines and cooperate with authorities to eliminate mosquito breeding sites and prevent the spread of the disease.
