Berlin In the federal government there is still no agreement on the controversial issue of basic child security. Ongoing high-level talks on the subject were initially adjourned on Friday, as the German Press Agency learned from government circles on Friday. “Bild” had reported on a “crisis summit” between Federal Minister of Finance Christian Lindner (FDP) and Federal Minister for Family Affairs Lisa Paus (Greens) on Friday morning. Both politicians could not have agreed on this.

The coalition has been arguing about the issue for months. It is about the content design and the financing of the project. With the basic child security, services for families are to be combined and also increased according to the will of the Greens. The FDP is critical of increases in benefits and referred, among other things, to the already increased child benefit.

At the beginning of July, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) got involved in the dispute with a letter to Paus and promised a draft law that would be agreed in the federal government by the end of August. He had asked Paus to draw up a draft. Its details are still being discussed.

The cabinet will meet next week for a closed conference at Meseberg Castle in Brandenburg. Deputy government spokesman Wolfgang Büchner said on Friday in Berlin when asked whether he expected an agreement on basic child security before this exam: “We assume (…) that we will come to a good agreement and a good result also with this topic until the end of the month, that’s close – in that respect, yes.”
