GGD Drenthe to Offer STI Consultations and Hepatitis B Vaccinations at Rainbow Festival

Those attending the Rainbow Festival in Emmen on Saturday might notice a large removal van parked at the event. This van belongs to GGD Drenthe and is being used for information and vaccine initiatives against hepatitis B. It is the first time that the GGD is partaking in the festival.

Dianne Schriemer of the GGD explained, “We rented a bus and created an STI clinic inside. It consists of a consulting room, a chair for blood draws, and a toilet.” The organization’s objective is to engage with festival-goers, providing consultations on sexually transmitted diseases as well as administering vaccinations against hepatitis B.

The presence of GGD at the Rainbow Festival is not a mere coincidence. Schriemer stated, “The hepatitis B virus can be transmitted sexually or through blood. We are specifically targeting certain groups for vaccination, such as sex workers, trans individuals, and men who have sex with men.”

Schriemer further emphasized, “Our intention is to approach festival-goers in a positive way rather than pointing out mistakes. We want to engage in conversations, listen to their experiences, and offer advice.”

To foster interaction with attendees, the GGD has organized two games. Participants will have a chance to win a surprise prize by guessing the number of condoms in a large glass jar. Additionally, there will be a ring throwing game, but instead of a wooden pole, festival-goers will aim for a dildo in a game known as “cock ring throwing.”

These games aim to make it easier for individuals to approach the bus for a conversation or possibly receive a hepatitis shot. Schriemer highlighted, “All services provided by GGD are completely free and anonymous.” For those seeking more in-depth discussions, on-the-spot appointments can be made.

The decision to transport a bus to the festival marks a new initiative for GGD Drenthe. Schriemer noted, “This is our first time, and besides consultations and vaccinations, it is important for us to portray a positive image.”

The organizers of the Rainbow Festival anticipate a turnout of 2,000 to 3,000 visitors. Schriemer expressed hope to engage and converse with around a hundred people on Saturday. While not everyone will participate, being present and available for support is regarded as crucial.

Overall, the GGD’s presence at the Rainbow Festival demonstrates a proactive effort to engage with festival-goers, provide essential information, and combat hepatitis B transmission within specific target groups.]
