AMD Completes Radeon RX 7000 “RDNA 3” GPU Family, No Additional SKUs Planned
In an announcement during the pre-show of the recent Radeon Gaming event, Scott Herkelman, Senior Vice President of AMD, confirmed that the company’s RDNA 3 portfolio featuring the Radeon RX 7000 GPU is now complete. This comes with the launch of the Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT, which are set to target the high-end gaming segment with price tags of $499 US and $449 US respectively. These new GPUs are scheduled for release on September 6th, offering gamers a wide range of options to choose from.
With the addition of the Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT, the Radeon RX 7000 GPU family now includes a total of six graphics cards. The lineup consists of the flagship Radeon RX 7900 XTX starting at $999 US, the RX 7900 XT for $849 US, the RX 7900 GRE for $649 US, the RX 7800 XT for $499 US, the RX 7700 XT for $449 US, and the RX 7600 for $269 US. Notably, AMD currently has no competitor in the $299-$399 US price segment, leaving a noticeable gap in the market.
Scott Herkelman explained that while the RDNA 3 lineup is complete, there might be future versions of the GPUs with similar specifications and minor changes, depending on market demand and competition. This suggests the possibility of a refresh similar to AMD’s previous Radeon RX 50XT series, which offered higher clock speeds and thermal design power. However, there is no information regarding any potential releases for the mobility side, meaning that the Navi 33 will be the best option for gamers. Reports of a possible Navi 32 variation for mobile devices seem unlikely.
Compared to the RDNA 2 lineup, which featured nine Radeon RX 6000 launches and three refreshed parts, AMD’s RDNA 3 family will offer nearly half the number of SKUs. There are currently no plans for AMD to launch an RTX 4090 competitor or target high-end gamers in the laptop segment. Rumors suggest that the RDNA 4 lineup, set to launch next year, will also not be focusing on the enthusiast space.
While AMD’s RDNA 3 GPUs provide strong competition for NVIDIA, their offerings in terms of ray tracing and efficiency fall behind. AMD aims to address these areas with future RDNA 4 and RDNA 5 GPUs. However, NVIDIA remains a formidable competitor, offering higher performance and overall efficiency. Despite the value AMD provides, NVIDIA’s performance crown continues to be a significant factor in retaining consumer mindshare.
