Who is Jack Markell, the new US ambassador in Rome

Time.news – The new American ambassador-designate landed in Rome today, Jack Markellhad been nominated by the president Joe Biden in May, in July it was confirmed by the Senate. Markell was governor of Delaware for two terms from 2009 to 2017 and then ambassador to theOECD in Paris, where he spearheaded US engagement within the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development on key issues such as technology governance, sustainable infrastructure, and government engagement at the state, county, and local levels.

Previously, he served in the White House as coordinator of the ‘Operation Allies Welcome’ project where he worked to ensure that eligible Afghan exiles were welcomed and resettled in the United States. He has chaired both the National Governors Association and the Democratic Governors Association, and served as president of the Council of State Governments.

During his tenure as governor, the state of Delaware emerged from the Great Recession with the strongest job growth in the region and among the states with the largest private sector wage increases. Markell has made significant investments to improvement of the children’s school system, language training programs, increased college admissions for students with low-income families, and worked on some of the most impactful workforce development projects in the country. Previously, you served as Delaware State Treasurer for 10 years.

Career in the private sector

Prior to engaging in the public sector, Markell held the position of vice president of business development at Nextel among various private sector positions, which include Comcast Corporation and McKinsey and Company.

He has also served on the executive boards of numerous private companies and non-profit organizations, including Upstream USA, Delaware State University, the Annie E. Casey Foundation and Jobs for America’s Graduates. He is also a Henry Crown Fellow and Rodel Fellow of the Aspen Institute.
