CC OO Asturias warned yesterday of the “contempt and labor marginalization that the older working population suffers unfairly” in the region, as a result of the information published the day before yesterday by LA NUEVA ESPAÑA that indicated that 45% of the Asturian unemployed at the end of 2022 (that is, 27,862 people, according to the latest data from the Principality Employment Service) were at least 50 years old. A percentage that is unprecedented.

“Our concern about labor discrimination against this group goes back a long way. More recently, in the proposal document prepared by the union for the regional elections in May, we specified the need for a crash plan for the employment of people over the age of 45 years old. We also did it with two other groups that were also worse treated by the labor market: women and young people,” explained Severino Menéndez Minas, the union’s head of Employment and Training, yesterday.

Menéndez also stressed that “there is no time to lose to deal with this labor mistreatment towards people who are in full power and who accumulate experience that it would be very clumsy to waste.” He also denounced that “the labor market cannot become an insensitive machine, a juicer that squeezes all the juice out of them and then throws them unceremoniously into unemployment.” In his opinion, “this is a particularly vulnerable group, because they are often people with children or dependent adults.”
