Berlin The SPD wants to introduce a nationwide rent freeze on the occasion of the debate about rising rents in Germany. “We need a breathing space for tenants – we need a rent freeze for the next three years,” said the deputy parliamentary group leader Verena Hubertz (SPD) of the newspaper “Bild am Sonntag” on Sunday in advance.

According to Hubertz, the SPD sees a need for action in view of the enormous rent increases and the drastically increasing ancillary and heating costs triggered by the war in Ukraine. In concrete terms, landlords in areas with a tight housing market would then only be able to increase rents by six percent in three years, and only until the comparable local rent has been reached.

In this context, the party plans, among other things, to tighten the penalties for exorbitant rents, to slow down price increases in index rents and to make terminations for personal use more difficult. At the meeting of the parliamentary group on Monday, a catalog of measures for more tenant protection is to be decided.
